A Surprise ICE Visit—Preparation Made All the Difference

ICE visit in Cleveland OH

Last week, one of our local Fractional HR clients in Cleveland experienced a surprise visit from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Thanks to some early planning, the situation was handled calmly and without disruption.

This organization has a diverse workforce and reached out to us earlier this year to partner on a response plan in case of an ICE visit. As you can imagine, it can be overwhelming — but because they had a clear plan in place, they were able to respond appropriately and confidently.

Why Would ICE Visit a Business?

ICE may visit a workplace for a variety of reasons, including:

  • To conduct an I-9 audit and verify employment eligibility documentation

  • To follow up on a tip or complaint (anonymous or otherwise)

  • To investigate potential violations of immigration or labor laws

Even if your business is fully compliant, an unannounced visit can still be stressful for your team and disruptive to operations. That’s why having a clear plan—and keeping your records in order—is so important.

If ICE showed up at your door today - would your team know what to do?

Having the right response plan is crucial, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Not sure where to start?

We guide our clients through:

  • Identifying the right contacts

  • Clarifying roles and responsibilities

  • Aligning with legal counsel

  • Preparing documentation and audit-readiness

We also recommend regular internal I-9 reviews—one of the first things ICE may request during an audit.

Don’t wait for a knock on the door.

Let’s talk about how we can help you be proactive and ready.
